  1. Dear Dr Lam

    Last night, we and especially my mum were very touched by your house to house visits. Given the 120 blocks in Sengkang West, it must be very exhausting. And given that you are already a Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist, you certainly don’t need this MP post to put food on the table.

    As you stood outside our unit, there were some things we wanted to tell you but the presence of your helpers deterred us. Of course, they have been of great help in your campaigning. Without them your task would have been next to impossible. But nothing comes without drawbacks. Your access to unfiltered voices of frustration is reduced.

    Like the saying “The best way to eliminate one’s enemies is to turn them into allies”. If only you could hear, unfiltered and perhaps even uncensored, these frustrated voices you would be better able to zoom in more accurately. It is sad that the top echelons have lost that direct link with the commoners.

    Of course it is not feasible to convert everyone especially if it relates to your party’s decisions eg Party Whip

    We are confident you will win: We like you as you are approachable. We have yet to spot the opposition’s Workers’ Party around here, or even so much as hear them coming round. Any votes not going your way are not votes against you, but are votes against PAP.

    You have all our best wishes and support

  2. Dear Dr Lam,

    My heartfelt congratulations to you on being elected again as an Member of Parliament (MP Elected) for Single Member Constituency for Sengkang West.

    You have been working hard during the past years managing Sengkang West and as residents of Sengkang West, seriously thanks for the efforts and your precious time in serving the residents of Sengkang West.

    From today onwards, the residents of Sengkang West requiring your double efforts and time for immediate attention in the following areas that the opposition promised to deliver that certain residents given mandate to them having almost 42% of the votes and have to be rectified so as to keep Sengkang West away from greedy opposition that’s going to expand because Sengkang West is very near to Hougang District.

    National Issues will leave it to the Government Main Committees to review and manage.

    Sengkang Residents problems are:-

    01) No Proper Banks in our Area except in Compass Point (Only OCBC & POSB)
    02) Certain Areas without ATM
    03) Requiring more feeder bus routing during the morning and evening peak hours to bring the residents to Sengkang MRT and bus interchange and back.
    04) Bus 163 very full even before reaching Fernvale stops and requiring extra during morning peak hours
    05) Certain areas without market or at least a supermarket such as NTUC thus requiring paying extra and time taken by taking bus to next available area.
    06) No Theater or Games Arcade for the youngsters in Sengkang West.
    07) Lastly, why NO “MEET THE PEOPLE’S SESSION” – MPS in Fernvale area and suggest an alternate session at Blk 436 between the present MPS at Anchorvale Blk 303 as needs to understand the problems facing by Fernvale Residents.

    Of course, there are more problems but the above especially transports are immediate and requiring your best efforts to bring forward to the Residents of Sengkang West.

    Thanks for your kind understanding and efforts to make it happen!

    Resident Blk 312B Anchorvale Lane.

  4. Dear Mr. Lam,
    I am a resident of Blk 405C fernvale lane. I have been staying fernvale for 7 years. 5 years ago, I have feedback to the town council that some of our light fittings at level 1 near to the lift lobby area are missing and it don’t look good without the fittings. Town council replied me that the light fittings are out of stock and they could not replace them. But it has been 5 years , the light fittings are still missing. I really hope that you can help us to look into this issue.
    Thanks and congrats for winning the election.

    • Hi Dr. Lam,Would appreciate if you can take a look at Anchorvale CC crapark traffic issue. At weekends, at about lunch time, where many parents are there to pick up kids from classes, sport activities, cars choke out at the crapark area, at the point of McDonald’s Drive thru area, as there are many cars queuing to order McDonalds at the dtive thru, blocking outgoing cars.This can get really terrible, at times where there the more cars trying to get into the crapark. With the Choke Point at the Drive Thru, incoing cars create a total deadlock blocking outgoing cars, even if car manage to squeeze through the McDonald’s Drive thru Choke Area.There are days, when this can cause cars stuck at this crapark for more than 30mins. Noted that, there is no CC Mgmt guys helping to direct or manage this when this happens, and it leave to individual drivers just try squeezing here and there, which is a total chaos, when this happens.It seems that, root to this problem is really the design of McDonald’s Drive Thru wrt the direction of cars flow within the crapark. Not sure if this can be changed, redesign or modified.A suggestion to ease this, is probably, a. Remove the Parallel Parking lots at just before the Drive Thru, and make it be part of the road. b. Size down the grass patch at the left and right of the McDonald’s Drive Thru, to create bigger opening, driveway out of the crapark.In doing the above, if you can create a 3 lanes Drive out (incl the McDonald Drive Thru), maybe, it will ease this situation over weekend.Dr. Lam, do look into this. Its really frustrating in weekends for parents like us, to be caught like this. Thanks

      Pin Min’s Reply:

      We have looked into this congestion issue and made modifications to the road (widening the junction and painting the yellow box). This alleviated the obstruction caused by waiting cars for the drive-in somewhat. We will continue to monitor the situation, and if necessary study other feasible solutions, considering the space constraints in that area.

  5. Dear Mr Lam,

    Firstly, congratulations on you being elected for Sengkang West. Certainly hope that you will continue to serve us well for the next 5 years.

    Secondly, I would like to bring to your attention on the inaccessibility of the transport system in Sengkang. I am a resident of Anchorvale Road, and have been living here for about 7 to 8 years. There hasn’t been much inprovement to the transport system here, except for an additional bus 85 to Yishun.

    There is just one feeder bus 372 catering to the residents of Anchorvale Road (bus stop opposite Blk 313 carpark). To make things worse, there are insufficient buses during peak hours in the morning as well as evening. On many occasions, passengers have been unable to get on the bus after waiting for about 20-30 minutes (for just a 5-7 min journey to Sengkang Interchange, which I think is ridiculous). We are mostly employees who need to be punctual for work too. I’ve feedbacked to SMRT on this issue on several occasions, however nothing much has been done, same problems still exist. A lot of residents have switched to walking to and from the interchange instead of using the bus service from what I’ve noticed.

    We would appreciate if you could please increase the frequency of the buses, and as well as adding other bus services to this bus stop.

    Another problem is that there is insufficient hawker centres or coffee shops here. The nearest is about 15 minutes walk. Would appreciate if we could have a market or hawker centres here for our residents.

    Thanks in advance for looking into these 2 problems that require more urgency.

    I am looking into these issues and wil try my best to improve the transportation and services in SW.

  6. Dear Dr Lam,

    May I inquire about the status of Sengkang West’s Town Council Funds? Specifically,

    a) I was under the impression that such funds corresponded to the groupings of GRC. For Sengkang West, which was part of AMK GRC in 2006 GE, how were the funds split? Did we get an amount that is proportional to the number of residents staying in SK West?

    b) As SK West is now smaller, do we still have the personnel to look after investments of the Town Council’s sinking fund?

    c) In the event that you do continue to invest the sinking funds, what are your plans for the profit that is generated?

    ~~~~~
    Pin Min’s Reply:
    Sengkang West will still be part of AMK Town council and thus there will be no division of separation of accounts / funds. This arrangement allows for better economy of scale in town improvement projects and deployment of manpower. The TC team that was looking after SW will remain.
  7. Oh, and before I forget, I would like to say this is a great site as it allows me to contact you directly. Please keep it going! Thanks!
  8. Dear Dr Lam,
    I would like to highlight to you that childcare fees are increasing every 6months and with the current subsidy of SGD 300 per child for working mother is not enough. After the subsidy we could still end up paying at least SGD 400 per month as compared to previously below SGD 300. I tried to apply for CDAC subsidy but was rejected due to my family net income is more than SGD 3500 which also includes my overtime. Now, the centre that my child is attending is being sold to another operator and they are increasing the fees that I’m paying by 100% and the current operator is going to back collect from me the fees as they claims that they did not increase my fees from SGD 280 to SGD 350 because I applied for CDAC. Since my application is rejected, they have to collect from me the fees which could amount to SGD 400 minimum for the past 12months. I tried all avenues and could get no help.
    Am I suppose to keep mum about all these and just pay?
    Can the subsidy for working mothers be increase to keep up with the increase school fees?
    Regards,
    Angie Ng.
    Pin Min’s Reply:
    Angie,
    I will feedback your concerns to MCYS. However, with regards to your issue of childcare centre raising the fees, I think there is no strict guidelines on the fees chargable as the quantum depends on many factors, including curriculum, duration of care etc.
    You can email me at vpmlam@gmail.com so that I can find out more from you and see who we can approach for assistance.
  10. Hi Dr Lam, I am a resident of ANCHORVALE Drive and have met you in person on your house visits during the election campaigning period. I would like to bring to your attention the poor service rendered by your town council. Lately residents in my block have been facing some threats from bees flying in the vaccinity. This is especially serious on my level where there was on one occasion more than hundreds of bees flying around. As a professional doctor I am sure you are aware of the impacts these bee bites will cause. I tried to follow up with your town council to get them to seriously look into this issue however I was told that the bees are free to roam hence town council is unable to do anything ( is this mocking me?) is there no preventive measure that the town council can take. So fine, I was told that I should contact the Town council when bees appear again. This evening, bees started to gather along my corridor and this time even into my home. I called the town council representative again and I was told they would call the pest control tomorrow as ‘it is already past office hours’. Dr Lam, as a parent yourself, could you please let me know if this response is acceptable? Thank you
  14. Hi Mr Lam,
    I would like to bring to your attention regarding insufficient infant childcare in our area, Fernvale Road. Recently, i saw alot of preggy mummies esp its Dragon next yr. With so many new blks coming up in our area, more families are seeking help with IFC. I would appreciate if our area can expand more IFC. Every IFC is on long waiting list which mades it an issue for us.
    Suggestion: since 439 SK West ave, beside the cc, there’s an empty space. Can you look into it for expansion? Im one of the mummies desperately need help at Fernvale rd for an IFC.
    With lack for IFC and no help fr the parents, no doubts….. our birth rate is declining.
    Thanks in advance for looking at it.
    I have informed MCYS about this issue and we have been working with several service providers to increase the number of childcare centres in Sengkang West. We will see more being set up in the next few months.
  15. Dear Dr. Lam,
    I am glad that residents are highlighting this gap to you. And fyi, we have been looking into opportunity to setup a childcare over this area. Sadly, there is no suitable space available or the rental is too high. At the end, I guess only NTUC could afford to setup centres over Sengkang.
    Lastly, if you have any good recommendation in terms of location with reasonable rental, I would be grateful to work on this opportunity if given a chance.
  16. Dear Dr Lam,
    First of all, I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate and thank you for making Sengkang West a pleasant place to stay in. However, due to the rapid increase in population here, the transport system here is far from satisfactory. From my observation, the crowd during peak hours is mainly make up of residents working in the big companies along Yio Chu Kang Rd such as ST Electronics, Motorola and NCS Hub. In the morning, the crowd is disappeared on bus service 163 when it arrived at NCS Hub. On the contrary, many who wish to board the bus cannot do so by the time 163 arrive at Motorola in the evening. May I suggest that the present feeder service 163M to extend its service until NCS Hub and U-turn back from Ang Mo Kio Ave 6 instead of the present route. I’m sure this will help in dispersing the office crowd during peak hours. Thank you!
    I would like to bring your attention regards to an issue due to the coffeshop Koufu at Fernvale Point. On 14 Feb morning , my wife had bought a kueh (carrot cake) from Kofu drinking stall and went back home. As she was eating the kueh through, she felt a sharp pain inside her mouth and she discovered a sharp struture poking to her upper pallet. Blood came out as a result. It turn out to be a sharp struture measuring 3cm.
  19. Dear Dr Lam,
    We are staying at Blk 441C and were very happy to know that there is a childcare centre at 441B. However, the childcare has very limited vacancies (15 toddlers in 3 classes) and the waiting list has 100 over kids. We have tried calling other childcare centres within sengkang and all have the same long wait list.
    With the governement encouraging more kids, yet the childcare facilities are not sufficient to meet current demand, this will definitely worsen the problem. We hope Dr Lam can look into this issue as there is a major shortage of childcare facilities within sengkang. Thank you.
    I am staying at Blk 406C and the surrounding area is very dirty and filthy. Why ? Dogs urine and faeces everywhere – walkway, pillars etc. You name it you got it ! Not forgetting the smokers and litterbugs. I have seen a middle aged lady with 3 dogs staying in HDB FLAT – BLK 407B.
    I suggest that Town Council work with AVA to identify those licensed dog owners and do spot check to weed out unlicensed one. Use CCTV camera to monitor the situation and you should be able to catch the culprit. We should get to the root of the problems and give our cleaners a break.
    If the Town Council cannot get the job done, I am sure you have the power to get it done.
    We just gotten our flat at Blk 435b Fernvale rd in Dec 11 and we are shifting into our flat in mid Mar 12. But as of yet, most of the childcare centres we enquire are all full and waitlist has shot to over 200 kids. We are looking at My First Skool at Compassvale Rd’s childcare centre, but it is currently full to the max and 70 over kids is on the waiting list. We hope you can help us as we want to put our kid (currently 18 mths now) in childcare centre end of Dec 12. Thank you.
  24. Hi Dr Lam,
    Kindly also help us check with Sparkletots childcare centre(PCF) whether there is any vacancies at the branch Fernvale Vista or whether there will be more childcare centres built towards end of Dec 2012 as it is nearer to Fernvale rd. Thank you.
    Dear Dr Lam,
    As the Hougang bi-election is on going and PAP have been championing of estate managed by them are superior to the opposition party……………
    I would like to bring to your attention and update of Senkang/Anchorvale Link estate………….
    I have been living at Block 316C Anchorvale link since the beginning of the estate when it was completed. I must say at the initial first one to two years the contractors in charged of maintenance had done a good job by keeping at least the block that stayed to good condition.
    But these last few years especially last one year, the block that I am staying is not kept to reasonable standard as promised.
    The carpark of basement 1 ; 2 of Block 316A, B and C, the lighting many were not lighted at night and it is rather dark and I worry the safety of my wife when she comes back late from work and she have to walk in such dark not lighted carpark area. I have made many calls to the town council but it to no avail. In fact I also did specifically mentioned to the town council over the phone that the lift lobby of car park basement one at Blcok 316C the 4 ft flourescent light was not lighted and also the ceiling above car park lot 381 have a big hole, but till today the problems are not retify yet.
    I gave up calling but choose to email to your attention and sincerely hope you can give directive and get all the lighting, ceiling and cleaniness of these 3 blocks up keep.
    I will grealty appreciate if these will be rectified.
  29. Hi Dr Lam,
    I’m a residence frim 405A fernvale lane. I would like to request if HDB woul contruct a small park with jogging track n fitness corner. I understand there is a huge park for us near the anchovale cc but it is rather inconvenient for us staying at fernvale to go all the way there to jog. We dun drive n its silly to take a bus there to jog. I also noticed a lot of people are jogging along the road pavement n also bringing theor kids to play at the open space (where the people r playing croquet now). Our fernvale neighbour hood does not have a proper jogging ground n also for kids to play n run. I hope DR lam could look into it a propose to have a small park built at that open space. It would really be ideal for our kids to have a place to enjoy family outdoor time with safety.
    Really appreciate if you could propose to the government. Thank you and appreciate your time for reading.
  31. Dear Dr Lam,As Fernvale is increasing in its potialpuon but has not meet the critical mass for the SBS to provide more bus services. At this transition period, a small number small of residents would welcome some small bus services, where the operation cost is subsidised, to improve this lacking. Instead of just relying on SBS 163. Moreover, the SBS 85 does not route into the Fernvale Lane and Sengkang West Ave. Some suggested bus routes could be as follow: 1. Fernvale to Ang Mo Kio Hub 2. Fernvale to Tampines 3. Fernvale via CTE to Orchard Road 4. Fernvale via SLE,KJE,PIE, to Jurong or Tuas 5. Fernvale to Toa Payoh or Bishan These small bus services would stop when the SBS is ready to take over.This would cater the present need of small number of residents before a significant number passengers is realised. It would bring the happiness or reduce the unhappiness amongst this group of residents who have been talking about it in the past years.The bus services is one of the major concerned in Fernvale. We hope you would keep improve it.Thank you.Warmest Regards,Dickson Ang
  32. Dear Mr Lam,
    I am writing as both a concerned resident of Sengkang and a mother of my 15th months old son. As my husband and I are both working parents, and also because my son is soon approaching the age where we hope he learns to be independent, my family wishes to place our son in a childcare centre.
    Unfortunately, upon enquiring with PCF Sparkletots Childcare Centre located at Block 441B Fernvale Vista on March 2012 (6 months ago), we were informed that there were a long, existing queue of families waiting for placements of their children in the childcare centre. As a result, we were placed in the waiting list instead.
    To my horror, when I called the childcare centre again on 12 Novmber 2012, I was informed that my son was still placed in the waiting list, and that there were more then a hundred childrens placed before him. Anxious that my son would not be able to obtain a place in any childcare centre, we registered him at My First Skool located in Toa Payoh.
    However, I wish to appeal for my son to be able to enroll with the PCF Sparkletots Childcare Centre, as it is located much nearer to my home. Aside from it being convenient, we are very concerned for our son’s safety, be it in terms of taking public transport or even crossing the roads. We also do not wish for our son to take public transport on a daily basis and wait excessive hours at the childcare centre for us to pick him up after we leave our workplace when there is a childcare centre so near our home. It would certainly be much less tough and tiring on both of us if my son would be able to enroll with the PCF Sparkletots Childcare Centre.
    With the current situation of childcare related services in Sengkang area, it is difficult to feel encouraged to have more children. We are extremely disappointed that a childcare centre, which primary purpose is to provide convenience for working families such as ours amidst others purposes
    (such as to provide a positive environment for children to learn and play), could become so inconvenient and cumbersome.
    The main motivation for my family moving to Sengkang is because we look upon it as significantly new place with many young people, and where fresh ideas can be shared and developed. Thus, my family and I hope that you will be able to take some serious consideration on this matter.
    We look forward to hearing good news from you. Thank you very much for your time.
    Your Sincerely,
    Mandy Lee
    Thanks for the feedback. I will ask the TC to remind the conservancy contractor on the standard of cleanliness and also to do more spot checks on the cleaners.
    Rgds.
  34. Dear Dr Lam,
    It is great that there is such a website that allows us to contact you directly. I’m a resident of Blk 312B Anchorvale Lane and have been staying here for 7 years. We are generally happy with the condition of the estate except for frequent breakdowns of the lift. Just last weekend, a visitor of ours was trapped in the lift and was of course a very unpleasant experience. We live on a high floor and our family with old folks & young school going children need to use the lift every day and do not want to live in fear of being stuck in the lift. I’m sure all the residents staying in this block feels the same.
    This problem has been around for many years and we have also brought it up to you during one of your door-to-door visits.
    Please look into this matter and let us know how things could improve.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Mrs Tan
